Victoria Cross ISD

Challenge
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. Located in the heart of North Sydney’s business district, Victoria Cross Station forms part of the City and Southwest program of works and will be one of the key station locations in the new network. The station will provide enhanced accessibility to business, education and residential communities via station access and entry through the pedestrian plaza opening to Miller, Denison and Berry streets.

SYSTRA were engaged on the Victoria Cross Integrated Station Development (ISD) to lead the Design Stage 2 and 3 Human Factors Integration services for Lendlease. The project involved the integration and coordination of human factors activities with interface contractors (TSOM / Line-wide), Sydney Metro, and internal contractors. The main internal scope included civils, structures, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic fire and earthing and bonding. Separate scopes included architecture, wayfinding and customer centred design, building management systems and vertical transportation.

Approach
The HF approach was to identify the relevant operational and maintenance tasks for all back of house and front of house areas, in normal, degraded and emergency modes. We derived HF requirements related to the relevant tasks (such as maintenance, inspection and cleaning) and incorporated these into the Requirements Verification Traceability Matrix (RVTM) for verification to support closure of selected HF issues.

Through the various design stages our HF specialists coordinated with Safety Assurance and attended Hazard Identification workshops for the internal interfacing contractors and external interfacing contractors. The HF analysis provided the framework for Operation and Support Hazard Analysis (OSHA) workshops ensuring that the tasks of all relevant users were incorporated into these reviews.

Benefit
The Human Factors activities provided by SYSTRA were part of a dedicated and integrated team including Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance, that was embedded within the Design Joint Venture. By providing a SYSTRA team of experienced assurance specialists from the different disciplines we were able to provide a genuinely integrated service in all aspects of the work.

In addition to the above Human Factors and Systems Engineering and Safety Assurance services, SYSTRA provided advice and guidance on the concept of ‘Integrating AEO’ as set out in the System Safety Standard T MU MD 20001 ST ensuring the Safety Assurance deliverables to Sydney Metro fulfilled the requirements of the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA).
