Cross River Rail ETCS Level 2
The South East Queensland network is near capacity due to bottleneck created by a single river crossing and just four inner city stations, to address this Queensland Rail have developed a program of improvements called Cross River Rail (CRR).
CRR is a new 10.2 kilometer rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, which includes 5.9 kilometers of twin tunnels under the Brisbane River and the CBD, the CRR project unlocks the bottleneck by delivering a second river crossing and by allowing more trains to run at increased rates throughout the day, increasing the networks overall service capacity.
The CRR is made up of three major packages of work Tunnels Stations and Development (TSD), Rail Integration Systems (RIS) and the European Train Control System (ETCS). The ETCS component will optimise network performance and provide rail safety benefits.
SYSTRA have been engaged by Hitachi Rail STS to perform and manage the Human Factors scope for project, which includes the integration of ETCS onboard equipment into existing rolling stock, the design and implementation of ETCS trackside, and the development and integration of ETCS and Traffic Management System into existing control rooms and control operations.
A team of SYSTRA Human Factors specialists have been engaged in this complex Human Factors Integration (HFI) project since 2019. The project involves technical and organisational changes across the Queensland Rail business. As such, the approach and implementation of Human Factors Integration is essential to the overall success of the project.
SYSTRA personnel have demonstrated our broad range of human factors expertise throughout the project. Human Factors Consultants employed Ergonomics Design and Usability in Safety Critical Applications skills in the redesign of existing rolling stock to accommodate ETCS equipment, and the customisation of the Driver Machine Interface (DMI) to meet the needs of Queensland Rail and its users.
We spearheaded major developments in the Rail Management Centre to better align with new organisational structures, and to accommodate new Traffic Management Systems (TMS). SYSTRA HF Consultants produced wireframe designs of TMS control interfaces, to ensure the UI addresses end-user needs, is resilient to potential errors, and represents UI and UX best practice.
SYSTRA employed a comprehensive Human Factors Assurance programme to identify and manage HF issues and derive requirements. We developed reliable and valid testing methods to demonstrate compliance with HF requirements.
Working in collaboration with SYSYRA Business Readiness personnel we ensured HF considerations were captured and addressed within training and procedure development.
The strength of human factors expertise within the SYSTRA team enabled us to support all aspects of this wide ranging and complex project. In addition to the Human Factors scope, SYSTRA is also leading the Business Readiness and Operational Performance Modelling streams as well as providing Technical, and Safety Assurance support to the project supported by a team of formidable ETCS experts. This enables us to integrate human factors recommendations across the project and ensures that the ETCS Level 2 solutions are designed and developed with consideration of end-user needs, capabilities and limitations, providing assurance of system safety and performance.
